Reshaping Research through User-Centric Design

What we do

The Stanford d.school Creativity in Research Scholars (CIRS) are a diverse set of Stanford PhD students across all disciplines. In addition to their primary research activities, these individuals are learning and applying design thinking to push the boundaries of their research field.

CIRS is a two-quarter program that teaches PhD students a design thinking tool kit and how to apply it to their research, culminating in a personal project. Students leave the program with the ability to identify and address needs in academia and beyond. The program is meant for doctoral students eager work collaboratively and understand user-centric practices.

Celebrate your work with the design community

Your project is your journey! At the end of the course, students will implement all the design thinking principles in a capstone project related to their PhD projects. These projects are the first step to realizing the potential in a unique research field for various stakeholders. It leads to a lasting change in how students approach their work.

Some examples from past years include: A VR game to understand gravitation, a guide to fermented foods, a platform to coordinate summer camps, an intro to VR for construction professionals, a podcast where doctors meet their patients and a DYI sattelite kit...
